  • I like to take my camera along to Recording Sessions and Concert Recordings. The pictures afford me a way of reviewing my work, and are an informative record of microphone positioning, etc. Here is an assortment of recording experiences, sometimes captured from the sidelines, while recordings are being made.

In August of 2010, and again in January 2011, the six voice version of Schola Magdalena convened in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Toronto to record their latest CD, “Virgo Splendens”. This was complicated because long time member Janet Reid Nahabedian has now moved to Strasbourg, France. Newcomer Gillian Howard does a wonderful job singing the lower passages, but I don’t think that anyone can really replace Janet’s alto profundo, and this expanded six voice unit certainly has a lot of vocal power.

Having the two sessions spaced five months apart meant that I had to take many photos of the mic positioning and make careful notes of all equipment settings. When it came time to re-establish everything in January, it all came together nicely, and this time we didn’t have to contend with noisy children playing in the playground next door, constant airplanes circling the CNE, and what seemed like a convention of motor cycle riders circling the church. I was very grateful for the de-noising and repair tools I have at my disposal, plus having made a collection of Impulse Response reverberation samples in SMM a couple of years before.

Work progressed over the summer, in conjunction with producer Bruce Kirkpatrick Hill, now sadly deceased. All editing and mastering was finished by June, so CDs and online files were ready in time for the official CD Release Party/Concert in September. For this event, the Schola was joined by Hurdy Gurdy player
Ben Grossman, who added his unique artistry to several solo works, as well as joining the Schola for a rousing finale.

    The
Schola Magdalena is Stephanie Martin, Jo-Ann Dawson, Kathryn Smith, Julia Armstrong Gillian Howard and Janet Reid Nahabedian.

This session was for the musical sections of the lecture/performance CD “The Gift of Genevan Psalmody for Today” by Calvin Seerveld, and recorded at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in January of 2011. Singers in this session were members of the Pax Christi Chorale: Mary Gillmeister, Jim King, Stephen Ellison, Merry-Anne Stuart, Hiro Kogure and Stephanie Martin. I was greatly assisted by producer Bruce Kirkpatrick Hill.

More information about this production can be found on Calvin Seerveld's
    Tuppence Press page.

Rob Teehan is Juno nominated composer (2010) who, in addition to playing tuba in a number of ensembles, writes music in a variety of genres. For this session, his intent was to capture some of his choral writing, to publicize his work over the web..

We recorded in historic St. Anne’s Church which, in addition to the famous frescos, some of which were painted by Group of Seven painters J.E.H. MacDonald,
Fred Varley and Franklin Carmichael and others including Thoreau MacDonald, Francis Loring and Florence Wylie. The Byzantine dome style of archetecture gives this space a unique acoustical signature, so I was lucky that the following week, I was able to go back to collect some Impulse Responses of the reverberation, assisted by my friend Karl Machat.

Examples from this production can be heard on the
    Rob Teehan Listening page.

From 2004 to 2008 I was employed at Ball State University in Indiana as the Recording Engineer for the School of Music. I taught classes in Audio Technology and supervised the students in the Concert Recording Service. We recorded just about everything - solo recitals to large ensembles and choirs, to full opera productions.

The centrepiece of this operation was the luxurious Sursa Concert Hall, which was constructed just before I arrived. Several CDs and countless concert/recital recordings were made here, and I was able to capture several Impulse Resonses of the Reverberation to use in the enhancement of many recordings.

Susan Adams and Clive Titmuss, two of my oldest friends, are dedicated specialists in the performance of Renaissance, Baroque and Early Classical music. Their Early Music Studio website offers a wealth of material, including articles, editions of Lute music, pictures and many sound files for download - some of which I recorded in their home in Kelowna B.C. over the Christmas break in 2004.

Back then, my equipment was a good deal more bulky that it is now, so I had to virtually take over Clive’s teaching studio for my control room. In July of 2004, we did a session where many works for forte-piano were performed, and then I returned in December of that year to record several works for Baroque Lutes, and for Harpsichord.

Examples from this session can be heard on the
    Early Music Studio's Listening page.

More information, articles, and many pieces of music for download can be found at
